Unbelieva-bao Asian Food In The North East

We recently visited the Bao Bar, located on Chillingham Road, Heaton. Newcastle, and more specifically Chilly Road, is already known for having a huge variety of restaurants and cafes to satisfy all your brunch, lunch, and dinner needs, but trust us, if you live in the North East you’re going to need to experience the authentic Asian food Bao Bar has to offer.

Right as you enter you are hit by the most amazing scent. Asian spices blend with the smell of warm dough to create an incredible aroma. Head chef and owner Richard, once head chef to a Saudi prince, is extremely passionate about his work, and is a friendly face behind the bar as he works tirelessly to put the meanest and most authentic dim sum, chicken sandwiches, and bao buns on your plate – take a look for yourself!

Contrast of flavours, and textures is clear in everything in Bao Bar, from the decor to the food itself. Dark marbled surfaces contrast with white tiled walls, in the same way that each dish had a beautiful contrast of textures and flavours to create a genuine experience for your taste buds.

The flagship bao bun came packed with tender, 16 hour slow cooked pork belly and tangy pickled cucumber, perfectly complemented with a rich, sweet hoisin sauce. The buns themselves were light and fluffy, accentuating the texture of the ingredients inside, and were some of the best we’ve ever had. Similarly, the light, delicate texture of the tuna tataki was complemented beautifully by the crunchy green wonton served with it.

You don’t have to worry about your dumplings being underwhelming, with the dumplings of the day being packed to burst with the most flavourful of pork and prawn fillings. Perfect for those trying to cram in the protein. It was a similar story for the chicken katsu sandwich, with the fillet in the middle filling out the bun, and served with a powerful yet delicious katsu curry mayo that was oozing with flavour and truly united the dish.

The biggest surprise came in the sweet chilli rice sticks; a crunchy shell gave way to a gooey, chewy centre, and with this fantastic texture being covered in delicious sweet chilli sauce it’s easy to see why Bao Bar claim this to be their fan favourite.

We absolutely loved everything that we ate, and with the simple and straightforward menu changing monthly there’s always going to be new flavours and textures for you to experience. For those searching for a meat-free plant-based bite, the menu includes both vegan and vegetarian options for you to enjoy.
